Day 21 - St John’s Day 3

We headed out to Cape Spear, the most eastern point in North America.

Everyone wanted their own picture with Toby 😂

We ate our lunch here and watched a type of bird called a Gannet, which dive bombs straight down into the water to catch fish.  It was mesmerizing.

Here we are toasting the midpoint of our trip (3 weeks) and being the very farthest from home that we will be! Tomorrow we start the journey towards home.

Beautiful wild Irises

Parks Canada runs the site and we did a free tour. We were the only people so it was a private tour. We learned about the former WWII bunker (which never saw action) and the old and new lighthouses

They could lift this gun up over the ledge to shoot at enemy ships and submarines that were approaching the St John’s harbour.

New lighthouse - it’s fully automated and uses electricity.

Old lighthouse - used whale oil lamps (and other types of oil when they became available) that required around the clock maintenance. The lighthouse keeper and their family would live here and run the lighthouse.  Before the WWII bunker was built there was no road and they would have supplies shipped over periodically  and they would have to walk out, so it was very isolated

Picture with the tour guide. Sam is holding up a little medallion you can get for completing a Parks Canada kids scavenger hunt booklet. They got them at Anne of Green  Gables house and the Alexander Graham Bell museum so they have a little collection going now.

From Cape Spear we went to Quidi Vidi, a small fishing town within St John’s.

The plan was to grab a drink (maybe try the iceberg beer supposedly made from the water harvested from iceberg chunks) but it was closed for a private function

So we had some cod bites and ice cream from local food trucks

We stopped at a liquor store and Toby found the iceberg beer to try

In the evening Julian started to develop a runny nose. Well, I think you know what that could mean. Stay tuned to find out more…

  1. How great that you celebrated the halfway point in your journey at the most easterly point! Kismet (and good planning!) I loved Quidi Vidi when I was there. Thanks for sharing these pictures. So, we are all dying to know: was the iceberg beer any more refreshing than regular beer? (Shelley)
