Day 17 - Cavendish Beach PEI to Pictou NS (by Bridget)

We had an action packed 1.5 days in PEI. This was the Boardwalk Motel, our temporary home.

We weren’t ready to leave PEI without one more experience- the beach!

After a few hours of beach fun it was time to start thinking about the 3 hour drive to Pictou NS, chosen for being halfway between Cavendish and North Sydney where we will be catching the ferry to Newfoundland!

We couldn’t leave PEI without having some Cows ice cream which doubled for lunch (don’t worry too much, we all ate a lot of veggies, almonds and other healthy things at the beach).  This was Avonlea Village, a collection of tourist shops & restaurants meant to look like a historic street

I didn’t want ice cream for lunch and I’ve always wanted to have a lobster roll, so I took the plunge and gave one a try. It was crammed with lobster meat and soooo good! (Which took the sting out of the sticker shock price)

On our way off the island we made a quick stop at a cute town called Victoria but we were getting antsy to get on the road and didn’t stay long.

Finally, one last stop to take a closer look at the Confederation Bridge before heading back across. You pay the toll on your way off the island, $50.25.  We were shocked to hear that PEI residents must pay this as well

It was pretty late by the time we arrived in Pictou and grabbed some groceries. The food prices seemed significantly more expensive in Nova Scotia than in Calgary, or even Ontario.

After checking into our Inn we walked the few blocks of downtown Pictou.

This boat is for sale. Sam seemed interested (although he doesn’t like actually being on boats 😛)

I expected to see the ship Hector (picture from the internet) in the Pictou Harbour. This ship brought the first boatload of Scottish Highlander’s in 1773. Reading all of the Outlander books during covid piqued my interest in this kind of thing. But the boat was up on the dock and barely looked like a boat. I tried to research and they may be trying to restore the boat to make it seaworthy.  I don’t think we even took a picture. And we were there too late to go to the museum. Oh well, you can’t win them all.

Tomorrow is the big day: we’re catching the ferry to Newfoundland!
